La galerie Thaddaeus Ropac est ravie d’accueillir pour la première fois une exposition personnelle du peintre roumain Adrian Ghenie.

Les œuvres de cet artiste qui a grandi dans la Roumanie de Nicolae Ceaucescu reviennent souvent sur les heures les plus sombres de l’Europe d’après-guerre et les acteurs majeurs de son histoire. Les souvenirs personnels ou collectifs, les scènes de films, les images glanées sur Internet et les renvois à l’histoire de l’art se fondent dans la trame de ses tableaux. Il parle de « peindre le grain de l’histoire » et son désir de recréer les aspérités du passé nourrit la facture extraordinairement expressive de ses toiles.

Adrian Ghenie présente dans l’espace du Marais un ensemble de dix tableaux récents où sa propre personne occupe le premier plan. C’est un thème central de son travail depuis 2010, qui trouve son aboutissement dans une vingtaine d’Autoportraits, oscillant entre l’exploration du moi et la création d’hybrides tels que l’Autoportrait en Vincent van Gogh, l’Autoportrait en Charles Darwin et l’Autoportrait en singe, tous réalisés en 2014.

Un catalogue rédigé par l’historien de l’art James Hall sera publié en complément de cette exposition.

Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac is delighted to announce its first solo exhibition of paintings by Romanian artist Adrian Ghenie.

Brought up in post-Ceausescu Romania, Adrian Ghenie’s work often dwells on the darker moments of post-war European history and the personalities whose actions have defined its course. Collective and personal memories, film stills, images culled from the Internet and art historical references are cut out and fused to make up the fabric of his paintings. Adrian Ghenie speaks of “painting the texture of history” and it is his fascination in recapturing these lost textures that give rise to the artist’s extraordinarily expressive use of paint.

The gallery in the Marais will present a group of ten new oil paintings in which the “self” takes center stage. This subject has been a central theme for the artist since 2010 culminating in just over twenty distinct “Self-Portraits”. Comprising of either pure investigations of his own self-image or hybrids such a Self-Portrait as Vincent Van Gogh (2014), Self-Portrait as Charles Darwin (2014) and Self-Portrait as a Monkey (2014).

A book will be published to accompany this exhibition with an essay by art historian James Hall.
