Les images sont de retour ! Le vingtième siècle en fut un d’iconoclasme. Les artistes d’avant-garde ont torturé les images de toutes les manières imaginables en les brisant, les fragmentant, les distordant, les manipulant, les déplaçant, les déracinant… Le temps est venu pour les images de prendre leur revanche. Désormais, elles nous submergent dans une avalanche continue et asphyxiante.

Les images sont aujourd’hui produites massivement. Elles circulent partout sur Internet et les réseaux sociaux. Elles gisent, dormantes, sur des serveurs distants, mais lorsqu’elles se réveillent, elles sont frénétiques. La prolifération des caméras bon marché et des plates-formes numériques nous a placés dans une condition de surabondance et de boulimie visuelle permanente. Les photographies sont gratuites, illimitées, immédiates et immatérielles. Dans la plupart des cas, elles sont aussi banales et conçues pour la consommation de masse. Est-il même possible de résister à ce tsunami photographique ? Comment la nouvelle génération de photographes tente-t-elle de répondre à ce problème ?

En près de quatre décennies d’engagement envers la photographie, Joan Fontcuberta (Barcelone, 1955) a développé une pratique artistique et théorique qui s’intéresse de près aux conflits entre nature, technologie et vérité. Son travail a fait l’objet d’expositions solo au MoMA (New York) et au Chicago Art Institute, entre autres, et ses œuvres figurent dans les grandes collections, comme le Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York), le Musée des beaux-arts du Canada (Ottawa) et le Centre Georges-Pompidou (Paris). Il a écrit une douzaine de livres sur l’histoire, l’esthétique et l’épistémologie de la photographie et il a organisé plusieurs expositions internationales, à la fois d’art historique et contemporain. En 1982, il a cofondé Primavera Fotogràfica, une biennale photographique à Barcelone, et, en 1996, il a été directeur artistique des Rencontres d’Arles. Joan Fontcuberta a reçu, en 2013, le prix de la Fondation Hasselblad. Il est actuellement le commissaire invité du Mois de la Photo à Montréal, qui se tiendra en septembre 2015.

Speaking of photography est organisé par le Département d’histoire de l’art de l’Université Concordia. Ce cycle de conférences, qui en est à sa huitième année, est rendu possible grâce à la générosité d’un donateur anonyme, ainsi que par le soutien de l’Institut de recherche en art canadien Gail et Stephen A. Jarislowsky, le magazine Ciel Variable et l’hôtel Château Versailles.

Toutes les conférences de la saison 2014-2015 auront lieu au EV-1.605, l’amphithéâtre York, au rez-de-chaussée du pavillon de génie, d’informatique et d’arts visuels, situé au 1515 Sainte-Catherine Ouest. Métro Guy-Concordia (carte).

Postphotography: The Revenge of Images

Images are striking back! The twentieth century has been dramatically iconoclast. Avant-garde artists have aggressed the image in every possible way: breaking, fragmenting, distorting, rearranging, displacing, uprooting… It is time for images to take revenge. So they are overwhelming us with an asphyxiating avalanche.

Images are now produced massively. They circulate throughout the Internet and the social networks. They sleep in the Cloud but when they wake up, they get furious. The proliferation of cheap cameras and digital platforms have brought us to the current situation of visual bulimia and a bloated surfeit of images. Photos are cost-free, unlimited, immediate, and immaterial. In most cases they are also banal and aimed at mass-consumption. Is there any chance of resisting that photo tsunami? How is new generation of photographers attempting to respond critically?

For nearly four decades of prolific dedication to photography, Joan Fontcuberta (Barcelona, 1955) has developed an artistic and theoretical practice, which focuses on the conflicts between nature, technology and truth. His solo exhibitions have been organized by MoMA (New York) and the Chicago Art Institute, among others, and his work has been collected by major institutions, such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art (NY), the National Gallery of Art (Ottawa) and the Centre Georges Pompidou (Paris). He has written a dozen books about aspects of history, aesthetics, and epistemology of photography, and has curated international exhibitions, both historical and contemporary. In 1982 he was the co-founder of Primavera Fotogràfica, a photography biennale in Barcelona, and in 1996 was appointed artistic director for the Arles Rencontres Internationales de la Photographie. Joan Fontcuberta was the 2013 recipient of Hasselblad Foundation Award. He is currently the guest curator for the Mois de la Photo à Montréal, to be held in September 2015.

Speaking of Photography is organized by the Department of History of Concordia University. The series, now in its eighth year, is made possible by the generosity of an anonymous donor, with additional support from the Gail and Stephen A. Jarislowsky Institute for Studies in Canadian Art, Ciel Variable magazine and Château Versailles Hotel.

All lectures in the 2014-15 series will be held in EV-1.605, the York Amphitheatre, on the ground floor of the Engineering, Computer Science and Visual Arts Complex, 1515 Ste-Catherine Street West. Metro Guy-Concordia (map).
