Nathaniel Rackowe – Edge Lands / Galerie Jérôme Pauchant (FR)

La Galerie Jérôme Pauchant est très heureuse de présenter du 18 décembre 2014 au 14 février 2015 une exposition personnelle de l’artiste anglais Nathaniel Rackowe intitulée Edge Lands, constituée d’un ensemble de sculptures et oeuvres murales inédites de la série SP (Scaffolding pieces) ainsi que des oeuvres de la série NLP (Neon lights pieces).

Nathaniel Rackowe jouit aujourd’hui d’une renommée internationale comme en témoignent les nombreuses expositions qui ont présenté son oeuvre, notamment aux Etats-Unis et en Grande-Bretagne, mais aussi en Chine, à Bogota, Copenhague, ou encore Bangkok. On retiendra notamment la présence de ses oeuvres dans l’exposition très remarquée Dynamo au Grand Palais à Paris en 2013, mais aussi à la Delfina Foundation à Londres ou encore au MoCA de Miami. Ses oeuvres font partie de collections internationales importantes : Jumex, Mexico,LVMH, Paris, Hauser & Wirth, Londres et Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation, Miami.

De par l’emploi de formes géométriques épurées et d’une gamme de couleurs restreinte, l’oeuvre de Rackowe est indéniablement minimaliste. Digne héritier des différentes tendances de l’ABC Art1 nées aux Etats-Unis dans les années 1960, Rackowe se situe plus spécifiquement dans la lignée des maîtres du néon en provoquant, comme Piotr Kowalski, une prise de conscience de l’architecture par la lumière, mais aussi à l’instar de Dan Flavin en expérimentant la perception de la couleur dans l’espace. En dématérialisant l’espace réel, la lumière produite permet d’éprouver les capacités cognitives du spectateur. Le néon est ici le moyen de montrer l’indescriptible, une forme mémorielle, relevant de l’architecture, qui dévoile son environnement tout en le transformant. Ainsi, le spectre lumineux métamorphose la notion de cadre permettant l’interaction de l’oeuvre avec l’espace. Cette interaction transforme l’esthétique et le sens même de l’oeuvre. Elle élargit son champ d’action.

L’oeuvre de Rackowe évoque aussi le constructivisme par l’importance de la ligne et la relation de la forme à l’architecture. Le néon renvoie à l’urbanisme et sa modernité. Les matériaux employés dans la série SP, faites de tubes fluorescents et de fixations et tubes d’échafaudages assemblés, sont directement liés à la notion brute du chantier de construction. Ils forment la silhouette de l’oeuvre, la lueur émise par le néon venant troubler ses limites physiques. Le titre de l’exposition se réfère à «Edgelands», ouvrage écrit par les poètes Michael Symmons Roberts et Paul Farley en 20112. Cette expression désigne la silhouette du monde périurbain, interface entre ville et campagne, entre architecture et nature. Ce passage où la ville commence à se déconstruire nous place à l’orée du monde urbain et des bastard countrysides, ces «fausses campagnes» décrites par Victor Hugo.

L’oeuvre de Rackowe tente de révéler cet espace de transition. L’artiste cherche à « atteindre et capturer la manière dont la lumière est capable de transformer ces environnements», les NLP «définissent l’espace en utilisant la lumière qu’elles émettent, l’espace, le «land» est défini par le rayonnement de son contour». La lueur du néon, cet espace «indéfini» qui prolonge l’oeuvre hors cadre et précise le rapport direct à son environnement, renvoie au paysage semiconstruit et transitoire décrit dans «Edgelands». Ainsi, l’espace périphérique prend toute son importance et devient partie intégrante de l’oeuvre.

Galerie Jérôme Pauchant is delighted to present the London-based artist Nathaniel Rackowe’s solo exhibition, entitled Edge Lands, with new sculptures and wall based works from the SP series (Scaffolding Pieces) and the NLP series (Neon Light Pieces), from December 18, 2014 to February 14, 2015. Nathaniel Rackowe’s work has been exhibited throughout the world: from the U.S. and U.K. to also China, Bogota, Copenhagen and Bangkok. Recent exhibitions of note include his participation to the successful exhibition Dynamo at the Grand Palais, Paris, in 2013, also exhibitions at the Delfina Foundation in London, at MoCA in Miami and at the Bangkok Art and Cultural Center. His work is part of many international collections including: Jumex, Mexico, LVMH, Paris, Hauser & Wirth, London and Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation, Miami.

By its use of pure geometric lines and the limited range of colours, Rackowe’s work is undeniably minimalist. Worthy successor of the ABC Arti and other artistic movements from the American 60’s, he follows the neon masters, such as Piotr Kowalski, by appreciating architecture with the use of the light, and like the artist Dan Flavin, by provoking the awareness of colour in space. The radiance produced by the light bulb reveals the ability of the viewer’s perception and the de-formation of the real space. The neon light becomes a tool that shows the non-substantial, a memory-based form pertained to architecture which unveils its environment. Therefore, there is a metamorphosis of the frame, revealing a connection of the work within space. This interaction transforms the aesthetics and even the meaning of the work. It extends its field of action.

In addition, the importance of the line and the interaction of the form with the architecture in Rackowe’s work both evoke constructivism. The fluorescent tubing is closely linked to urbanism and modernity. The materials used in the SP series, assembled fluorescent light bulbs, scaffolding pipes and couplers, are directly related to the boldness of building sites. They outline the work’s shape, while the glow produced by the neon blurs the lines.

The title of the exhibition refers to « Edgelands », a non-fiction book by Michael Symmons Roberts and Paul Farley published in 2011ii. The meaning of the term “edgelands” lies in the city’s outskirts, the interfacial zone between urban and rural, the space where city and countryside fray into one another, between architecture and nature. This path where the city starts to deconstruct leaves us at the edge of the urban world and the “bastard countryside” depicted by Victor Hugo.

Nathaniel Rackowe’s work tries to reveal this transition space. The artist « attempts to capture the way the light transforms these environments, the NLP series defines space by using a lit permitted, the space or “land’ within is defined by its glowing edge. The light, this undefined space that extends the work out of its frame and specifies the direct interaction with its environment, refers to the half-built and transitory landscapes described in “Edgelands”. Thus, the peripheral area becomes crucial and part of the work.
