François Vincent – Tableau de chevet / Lacerte art contemporain Montréal

La galerie Lacerte art contemporain présente, du 2 au 26 octobre 2013, le travail de François Vincent. L’ensemble de l’exposition regroupe ses peintures les plus récentes. La pratique assidue et cette inlassable rencontre avec le médium montrent aujourd’hui une maturité dont témoigne l’espace pictural si singulier, proposé ici et que l’artiste choisit d’intituler Tableau de chevet.

Soucieux du savoir-faire et redéfinissant le métier comme dimension porteuse de l’œuvre, l’artiste résout les problèmes inhérents au médium en proposant une réponse inspirée quant à la place et à la pertinence de la peinture dans l’espace contemporain. À ce propos, Jean Pichette écrit sur le travail de Vincent un texte concis dont la portée situe la pensée de l’auteur sur ce que peut la peinture encore aujourd’hui. On en cite ici un extrait parlant de ces verticalités structurantes. « Ces lignes de fût ne sont ni abstraites ni figuratives: elles sont, pourrait-on dire, une pure présence. Loin d’établir des frontières, elles unifient un monde qui se déploie d’abord dans la profondeur. Elles nourrissent le sentiment d’être de celui qui participe de cette réalité, face au tableau, qu’il prolonge en s’absorbant en lui. »

L’artiste lui-même évoque ainsi une quête inscrite dans un parcours dont la voie d’entrée est essentiellement poétique.

« La peinture ne fait pas que découper l’espace, elle mesure aussi le temps. Elle le prolonge pour ceux qui attendent et voient, comme si nos distractions se dissipaient, fondues dans l’ombre , absorbées par la couleur. Il y a dans ces tableaux des objets éclairés, déposés dans le calcul et l’assurance d’une deuxième dimension. Il y a des drapés qui sont des rideaux et des forêts. Il y a des anneaux de Saturne, des amulettes et des jeux. Il y a la pâte et la peau. Le vide des plages sombres, des écrins veloutés. Il y a leur lumière feutrée, l’interstice d’un rien d’éblouissement et la dorure tissée de son silence.

En plus des peintures, l’exposition comprend une suite d’estampes inédites où François Vincent propose une rencontre entre l’entaille de la gravure en creux et la pixellisation du numérique. Signalons enfin, l’installation en août dernier d’une oeuvre imposante par son format et son emplacement dans le hall d’entrée du nouveau Centre de recherche du CHUM. Notes biographiques: 

François Vincent est né en 1951 à Montréal. Inscrit à l’Université du Québec à Montréal, il obtient en 1972 un baccalauréat spécialisé en linguistique puis en 1974 un autre spécialisé en arts plastiques. Il travaille depuis plus de 35 ans comme peintre et graveur. Au cours de ces années, il fut plusieurs fois boursier et récipiendaire de nombreux prix soulignant son talent d’artiste. On retrouve ses oeuvres dans plusieurs collections publiques et privées au Canada, aux États-Unis, en Europe et au Japon, ainsi que dans certains lieux publics grâce au programme québécois du un pourcent . Il a participé à la conception scénographique de spectacles à Montréal et aux États-Unis. François Vincent expose régulièrement son travail dans des galeries à Québec, Montréal, Ottawa, Halifax et à l’étranger, notamment au Japon, à Tokyo et Nagoya.

Galerie Lacerte art contemporain presents the work of François Vincent from October 2 to 26, 2013. The exhibition entitled Bedside painting, features all of his most recent paintings. Constant practice and tireless encounters with the medium have resulted in a maturity that is evident in the pictorial space proposed by the artist.

Dedicated to craftsmanship as a way of conveying the meaning of his work, the artist resolves the problems inherent in the medium and offers a response about the place and relevance of contemporary painting. Jean Pichette has written a short article about Vincent’s work (see link below for complete text), situating it within his own thought about painting today. In it Pichette talks about vertical structuring. “The lines are neither abstract nor figurative; they are, for all intents and purposes, purely present. Far from throwing up boundaries, they unify a world that unfurls before us into new depths. They nurture a sense of being for spectators who join in this reality; indeed, enabling them to absorb and prolong this sense of being.”

The artist, himself, also evokes a quest, a journey where the entry point is essentially poetic.

“A painting does not merely dissect a space; it measures time, extending it for those of us who linger and look, dissolving our distractions into its shadow and absorbing them into its colour. In these paintings, bold, vibrant objects are positioned with the calculated precision and assurance of a second dimension. Paint on palette, in its compelling malleability, is transferred to the canvas in considered strokes. Drapery hangs in folds lush as a forest. Saturn’s rings radiate next to amulets, ornaments, velveteen cases, playthings. Against the isolation of sombre expanses, the light is diffused, its fleeting glow interwoven with the gilded stillness of the works.”

Along with the paintings, François Vincent is showing a series of new prints that are a meeting between etching print making and digital pixelation. One of Vincent’s large paintings was displayed last August at the new CHUM research center. The work was impressive because of its size and its placement in the lobby. Biographical notes :

Born in Montreal in 1951, Francois Vincent studied at Université du Québec à Montréal, where he obtained two bachelor degrees : One in linguistics in 1972 and another in fine arts in 1974. He has been working as a painter and an engraver for more than thirty-five years. Throughout these years, he has received numerous grants and awards in recognition of his talent as an artist. His artworks can be found in numerous public and private collections across Canada, the United-States and Japan as well as in many public spaces mostly due to his involvement in the One Percent for art program. He has participated in scenographic design for shows in Montreal and the United States. Art galleries in Quebec City, Montreal, Ottawa, Halifax and abroad, mainly in Tokyo and Nagoya, Japan, regularly exhibit François Vincent’s work.
