Andrew Gayed – Holy Week / Z Art Space

Dans cette exposition, les spectateurs sont invités à évaluer la relation qui existe entre le sacrifice, les croyances religieuses et l’identité culturelle. Le titre de l’exposition, Holy Week (Semaine sainte), fait référence aux cérémonies de deuil suivies des célébrations spécifiques à l’église copte orthodoxe. À travers la série photographique "The Third Sex" (le troisième sexe) et des oeuvres vidéo nouvellement réalisées, "Sacrifice" et "Baptism" (Baptême), les spectateurs témoignent du sacrifice d’identité enduré par les homosexuels en Irak, ainsi que des conséquences cruelles de la ferveur religieuse et sociale. À travers les témoignages de survivants irakiens, l’artiste réclame son pouvoir en faisant appel aux idéologies religieuses qui ont été utilisées par l’église copte orthodoxe pour l’ostraciser. Ainsi, cette exposition mènera le public à prendre conscience de l’affliction des homosexuels au Moyen-Orient, ainsi qu’aux récits parallèles d’homosexuels de la diaspora du Moyen-Orient au Canada.

Né à Toronto, Andrew Gayed est un artiste basé à Ottawa qui exerce sa liberté politique par l’expression artistique. En tant qu’homme canadoégyptien de première génération, les notions de race, de déplacement et de tolérance sont au coeur de sa pratique artistique. Vivant dans une polarité de systèmes culturels entre l’Ouest et l’Est, Gayed se sert de l’art pour mieux comprendre son identité et ses croyances en tant qu’un homme égyptien cis genre luttant pour les droits de l’homme et pour l’acceptation.

HOLY WEEK, a reference to the specific mourning, grieving, and later celebratory religious ceremonies that take place in the Coptic Orthodox Church, invites the viewer to evaluate the relationship between sacrifice, religious beliefs, and cultural identity. Between "The Third Sex" photography series and new video works, "Sacrifice" and "Baptism", viewers bear witness to the sacrificial identities of homosexuals in Iraq, as well as to notions of torture and slaughter as consequences of religious and social fervor. Testimonials from Iraqi survivors are exhibited with the artist’s own performances in an attempt to discuss societal scapegoating of the Gay’s in the Middle East, and to reclaim religious tenants that were used to denounce and ostracize the artist from the Coptic Orthodox Church and his family. HOLY WEEK speaks to the affliction of the Gays in the Middle East, thereby paralleling narratives with the homosexual population of the Middle Eastern diaspora in Canada.

Born in Toronto, Andrew Gayed is currently an Ottawa-based artist expressing his political freedom through artistic expression. Identifying as a first generation Canadian-Egyptian male, notions of race, displacement, and tolerance are foundational in his practice. In using art as a medium, Gayed developed artistic strategies to unlearn basic principles of hegemonic norms, denaturalizing and subverting racist, misogynist, and homophobic norms of oppression. Functioning between two sets of cultures and beliefs, Gayed develops his art as a medium to help better understand himself and his own beliefs as a cis gendered Egyptian male fighting for human rights and acceptance.
