SIMON BELLEAU 

Avec 46.18, -74.86, l’espace des Territoires devient le point focal de coordonnées géographiques choisies très précisément par l’artiste. L’exposition se présente comme une synecdoque : les parties d’un territoire reconstruisent un paysage.

Chacune des compositions est nommée avec précision, à la façon d’archives soigneusement classées : le visiteur a sous les yeux des paysages et des portraits qu’il ne peut plus discerner. Une distorsion des clichés met sur un même pied d’égalité portraits d’humains et de rivières. Les portraits-paysages abstraits de Simon Belleau effacent le particulier et révèlent d’autres identités, rappelant à l’homme son appartenance intrinsèque au territoire.

Simon Belleau provoque l’altération de notre vision avec méthode. Usant au début de sa pratique des conditions climatiques naturelles (exposition aux intempéries et au temps), c’est désormais avec des procédés chimiques que Simon Belleau s’applique à déconstruire le matériau photographique qu’il a lui-même produit, à faire ressortir la matière de ses clichés – encre et papier, texture et couleurs – qui viennent à la fois subvertir et exprimer le paysage représenté.

Simon Belleau détient un baccalauréat en photographie à l’Université Concordia et prépare actuellement une maîtrise en Beaux-Arts à l’école du Art Institute of Chicago. Son travail mêle photographie, peinture et sculpture. Ses œuvres ont déjà été présentées aux Territoires dans le cadre d’une exposition collective, Monobandes II. En 2013, Simon Belleau a effectué une résidence en Islande à Listhus qui lui a permis de finaliser le projet 46.18, -74.86.

In 46.18, -74.86, the exhibition space of Les Territoires becomes the focal point of a series of geographical coordinates specifically chosen by the artist. The exhibit appears to be a synecdoche: the various parts of a territory re-make the landscape.

Similar to meticulously organized archives, each of the compositions wears a precise name. Here however, the viewer is presented with landscapes and portraits that are no longer recognizable. The process of distortion imposed on the pictures sets portraits of humans on equal footing with portraits of rivers. The abstract landscape-portraits by Simon Belleau erase the specific, reveal other identities and serve as a reminder of man’s intrinsic belonging to the territory.

Specific to Simon Belleau’s practice is his alteration of our vision. At first using natural climatic conditions (exposing the works to adverse weather conditions) Simon Belleau now uses chemical processes in order to deconstruct the photographic material that he previously produced, applying himself to bring out the materials which make up his photographs – ink and paper, texture and colours – at once subverting and representing the shown landscape.

Simon Belleau holds a BFA in photography from Concordia University and is presently working towards a MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. In his work, he uses photography, painting and sculpture. His works have previously been shown at Les Territoires in a collective exhibit entitled Monobandes II. In 2013, Simon Belleau participated in an artist residency in Listhus, Island that allowed him to complete his project 46.18, -74.86.
