« Il n’y a pas de plus grande satisfaction pour l’Homme moderne que de construire une armoire en kit. Le produit résultant de cette action devient un objet construit de ses propres mains. Cet objet devient une preuve de sa tentative à s’intégrer dans le monde et de le contrôler. »

Avec un cynisme subtil, mi-désinvolte, mi-engagé, Timothée Messeiller interroge en profondeur la démarche artistique au sens large, l’ « être artiste », et par dessus tout, le « faire artiste ». Puisant aussi bien dans la culture populaire que dans l’histoire de l’art, Timothée Messeiller interroge donc les rapports de l’artiste au processus de production artistique et de fabrication. L’art, l’artisanat, le design et l’armoire en kit se trouvent mis en confrontation dans son travail, qui intègre aussi bien de la performance, de la sculpture, des installations que du dessin.

« Haustel », néologisme évoquant tant l’hôtel, phonétiquement, que la maison, sémantiquement, nous invite dans un espace d’exposition transformé en intérieur au sol et murs garnis. Mettant en abyme les pratiques d’embellissement de l’habitat, Timothée Messeiller produit de ses mains une décoration qui pose aussi bien la question de l’utilité de l’objet que de l’oeuvre d’art.

L’exposition sera rythmée par une programmation de six performances qui viendront modifier l’espace, et d’un concert du groupe The Awkwards, dans lequel se produit l’artiste.

Timothée Messeiller est né en Suisse où il débute sa formation artistique. Il obtient son Bachelor en arts visuels à l’Ecole cantonale d’Art du Valais. Il participe en tant que performeur à plusieurs rencontres spécialisées en Suisse et en France. Il prépare actuellement un Master en Beaux-Arts (spécialité Fibres) à l’Université Concordia. Timothée Messeiller est également musicien guitariste au sein du groupe disco-punk The Awkwards avec lequel il se produit en Suisse, en Allemagne, en France et bientôt au Canada.

"There is no greater satisfaction for the modern Man than to assemble a cabinet from a furniture kit. The resulting product of this action becomes an object he has built with his own hands. The object comes to signify his attempt to integrate the world and to control it."

Subtlety using cynicism, in a casual yet committed manner, Timothée Messeiller heavily questions notions relating to artistic practices, the artistic personae and above all, the makings of an artist. Drawing inspiration from both pop culture and art history, Timothée Messeiller questions the relationship between the artist and the creation and production process. In his work, using performance, sculpture, installation and drawing, Timothée Messeiller confronts high art to handicrafts, design and the cabinet built from a kit.

"Haustel" evokes the hotel phonetically as well as the house semantically. This "Haustel" invites the viewer to an exhibition space that has been transformed into an interior space, floors and walls included. Utilizing various common practices for embellishing a living space, Timothée Messeiller uses a mise-en-abîme by creating all the decorative works with his hands, begging the question of the utility of the object as well as that of the work of art.

The exhibit will be punctuated by six performances that will alter the gallery space as well as a concert by The Awkwards, a music group to which the artist belongs.

Timothée Messeiller was born in Switzerland where he started his artistic education. He obtained his BFA from the École cantonale d’Art du Valais. Today, he performs in a number of specialized meetings in Switzerland and in France. He is presently completing his MFA (Fibers concentration) at Concordia University. Timothée Messeiller is also a musician and guitarist in the disco-punk group The Awkwards with which he has performed in Switzerland, Germany, France and will soon perform in Canada.
