Isabelle Guimond –À une déception près de finir ma vie avec 300 chats / Galerie Simon Blais

Peintre avant tout, Isabelle Guimond utilise la photographie comme point de départ et source d’inspiration pour répertorier des scènes de son quotidien, de son environnement. Elle écrit d’ailleurs : « Mon travail est fait d’allers-retours entre la rue et l’atelier, entre le saisissement d’une représentation picturale par voie photographique et son dessaisissement dans l’acte de peindre, entre la nécessité de raconter le monde dans lequel je vis et les contingences inhérentes au travail de la matière. » Cette artiste met en lumière notre culture populaire et quotidienne en nous confrontant à la réalité de son quartier : Hochelaga. Dans ce quartier défavorisé, parfois violent, subsistent une part de rêve et la conviction que quelque chose d’inattendu peut se produire. Au moyen de couleurs criardes, Isabelle Guimond valse entre une critique sociale de notre mode de vie et un récit intimiste proche de l’autofiction.

Above all a painter, Isabelle Guimond uses photography as a starting point and a source of inspiration for recording scenes from her everyday life and environment. As she has written, “My work consists of a constant back-and-forth between the street and the studio, between capturing an image through photography and then removing it through the act of painting, between the need to describe the world I live in and the contingencies inherent to working with whatever medium I am using.” She is an artist who shines a spotlight on familiar popular culture by bringing us face to face with the reality of the Montréal neighbourhood in which she lives, Hochelaga—a disadvantaged, sometimes violent area, where there nonetheless still remains a chance to dream and a feeling that something unexpected could happen at any moment. With her garish colours, Isabelle Guimond shifts between a hard look at our way of life and an intimate narrative that is close to fictionalized autobiography.
