L’exposition Peintures 2003-2013, de Rita Letendre, regroupe une sélection importante d’huiles sur toile représentatives d’une décennie de vive création. La gestuelle franche de cette artiste active depuis la fin des années 1940 est ici reconnaissable, de même que le dynamisme de ses compositions picturales. Souvent constituées de touches transversales peintes selon un axe diagonal et dans de forts contrastes, les œuvres de Letendre distillent une énergie forte, non dénuée de qualités méditatives.

Parallèlement, la Galerie propose en salle 3 un corpus d’œuvres sur papier réalisées par Letendre dans les années 1960. L’artiste privilégie alors la caséine et se restreint à une palette de couleurs principalement composée de noir agencé à quelques couleurs vives. Cette approche minimale lui permet de déployer avec dextérité et de manière spontanée un riche vocabulaire graphique.

Rita Letendre est née à Drummondville, au Québec, en 1928 d’un père québécois et d’une mère d’origine amérindienne (abénaquise). Après des études en arts, son œuvre évolue au contact de différents mouvements artistiques, dont celui des automatistes de Paul-Émile Borduas. Ses nombreuses expositions au Canada de même qu’à l’étranger — elle séjourne en France, en Italie, en Israël et aux États-Unis, pour enfin s’installer à Toronto en 1970 — ont fait d’elle une artiste incontournable de l’après-guerre au Canada. Elle reçoit en 2010 le Prix du Gouverneur général du Canada, la plus haute distinction accordée aux artistes en arts visuels au pays.

The exhibition Paintings 2003–2013, by Rita Letendre, brings together a large selection of oil on canvas works representing a decade’s worth of intense creativity. In them can be seen the clear gestuality and dynamic pictorial compositions that have characterized the output of this artist, active since the late 1940s. Often comprising horizontal swaths of highly contrasted colour painted on the diagonal, Letendre’s works exude a powerful energy that is not without a meditative quality.

On display at the same time in Gallery 3 will be a group of works on paper created by Letendre in the 1960s. The artist then favoured casein as a medium, restricting herself to a palette that consisted mainly of black and a few bright colours. Such a minimalist approach enabled her to exploit a rich graphic vocabulary with artful spontaneity.

Rita Letendre was born in Drummondville, Québec in 1928 to a Québécois father and Abenaki mother. Following studies in art, her work evolved through her association with various artistic movements, including that of Paul-Émile Borduas’ Automatistes. Her many exhibitions in Canada and abroad—she spent time in France, Italy, Israel and the United States before finally settling in Toronto in 1970—have made her a key artist of the country’s postwar period. In 2010 she received a Governor General’s Award, the highest honour granted to Canadian visual artists.

Le travail de cette jeune artiste est ancré dans l’idée de processus. Ainsi la répétition du geste se trouve-t-elle au cœur de sa peinture et l’action y est mise au premier plan. Tout repose sur la performance du geste, comme si la présence du corps avait laissé sa trace au fil des œuvres. L’artiste bâtit une sorte d’écriture par une abondance d’actions répétées, comme un mot ou un message qu’on laisse derrière soi. En alternant les actions très franches et les jeux d’effacement, elle questionne le rapport entre le dit, le non-dit et l’incommunicabilité.

Marie-Eve Beaulieu termine actuellement une maîtrise en arts visuels à l’Université du Québec à Montréal sous la direction de François Lacasse. Lauréate du prix Sylvie et Simon Blais pour la relève en arts visuels (2013) et de la bourse d’excellence McAbbie (2005), elle a participé à quelques expositions collectives à la Parisian Laundry, à la Galerie Art Mûr ainsi qu’à l’Atelier Circulaire. Elle a également bénéficié du soutien des Ateliers Graff, où elle a obtenu une résidence en art d’impression dans le cadre du projet Insertion. Depuis 2012, elle participe à l’ambitieux projet d’exposition Leipzig-Montréal, qui regroupe une dizaine d’artistes de la Saxe et du Québec.

Also on view at Galerie Simon Blais will be Peindre & dépeindre, by Marie-Eve Beaulieu, recipient of the 2013 Sylvie and Simon Blais Award for Emerging Visual Artists. Among other works, the exhibition will include a huge installation made up of some hundred paintings on paper exploring a range of brushstrokes and textures arranged in mosaic-like fashion.

The work of this young artist is rooted in the notion of process. At the fore of her painting is a focus on the action that is the repetition of gesture. It is entirely based on the performance of the gesture, as if the body making it had left the mark of its presence on the succession of works. Through a profusion of repeated actions, this artist creates a kind of writing, like leaving a word or a message behind. By alternating very clear gesture with effacement, she questions the relationship between what is said and what is left unsaid—and what is incommunicable.

Marie-Eve Beaulieu is currently completing a master’s degree in the visual arts at the Université du Québec à Montréal, under the supervision of François Lacasse. She is the recipient of the 2013 Sylvie and Simon Blais Award for Emerging Visual Artists, as well as the 2005 McAbbie Merit Scholarship, and her work has been shown in a number of group exhibitions at Parisian Laundry, Galerie Art Mûr, and Atelier Circulaire. She has also benefited from the support of Atelier Graff, where she took up a Project Insertion residency in the art of printmaking. In addition, she has taken part in the ambitious Leipzig-Montréal exhibition program, involving ten artists from Saxony and Québec, since 2012.
