Ripley Whiteside’s Introduced Exotics – Accidental Escapes presents a series of drawings that depict scenarios of natural phenomena within specific landscapes in strange ways. In an effort to explore the complications inherent to nature’s definition, the artist has sought iconographic ways to depict "nature". Ripley looks for nature as it is already represented in culture. The artist juxtaposes plant and animal elements that would not normally be seen together, subverting the archetypes that underline the models that make up our definition of nature. These pictorial sources include John James Audubon’s pioneering ornithology, Walter Foster’s foolproof landscape painting books, assorted primary school and science textbooks, and Roger Tory Peterson’s field guides, among others. The large scale of Ripley Whiteside’s drawings lure us into these strange worlds, inciting an immersive experience.

Les Entrelacs is an evolutionary kinetic machine that is designed to tie and untie knots. By reflecting upon and recognizing the physical activity inherent in generating dynamic form, Alice Jarry has designed an electrical network that is gradually extended throughout Les Territoires, and is set in motion, creating a modular surface for projection. Over time, an increasingly dense canvas will be grafted and will invade the space of the gallery. Every day, this ephemeral form will create a new configuration that emerges from the exchange between energy and its active components: time, gravity, traction and light. As each wire is stretched, it continuously reshapes the topology of the relationship between image, object, movement and space.

Alice Jarry (Montreal) has a background in Design & Computation Arts and is completing an MA in Visual and Media Arts at UQAM. She currently teaches at Concordia University. Her practice, originating from printmaking, has developed into installation and digital arts. She is interested in the transformative movement of material and the possible permutations between physical and digital spaces. Her approach to installation in situ emerged from the process where materiality hybridizes, and has been presented in different exhibition venues in Canada and the United States.
